What Is CNC Machining?

CNC machining is an advanced machining technology that uses Computer Numeric Control (CNC) to automate the movements of the machine. The machine reads and follows instructions from an NC program. The NC program will contain all the necessary motion, spindle, coolant, feed rate, and adjustment commands. An NC program is created after a solid model has been received or created. In a nutshell, suitable tools and toolpaths are selected and assigned to machine specific features of the component. The machinist will verify that all the features measure within the tolerances specified on the drawing. Some workpieces will require multiple operations to create a finished product. The main benefits are complex shapes can be machined with little human interaction and in a small amount of time compared to traditional methods. Better accuracy and lower price per part are also strong arguments to choose CNC machining.

CNC Turning

CNC Turning

CNC Turning focuses mainly on round or hexagonal workpieces with round features. Depending on the part long bars can be used to further automate production. This is called bar feeding. Typically, the workpiece is held in a hydraulic chuck and rotated at the recommended RPM for the operation. The cutting tool then follows the motions that are commanded in the NC program to remove material from the workpiece until the final shape is achieved. Typical operations performed on a CNC lathe include facing, turning, drilling, boring, grooving, tapping, thread cutting, broaching, knurling, reaming and parting off.

CNC Milling

CNC Milling is a manufacturing process that uses a cutting tool mounted in a spindle that rotates to remove material from a workpiece. The workpiece can be virtually any shape, size or material type and is fastened to the table. CNC milling is a versatile solution to provide rapid prototypes, run production and do quick repair jobs. Typical operations performed on a CNC mill include milling, facing, drilling, tapping, reaming, boring, sawing, grooving, counterboring, broaching.

Eturn CNC’s Solution

We provide quick turnaround time of quality machined components. We specialize in prototypes, repair work and low quantity production runs (typically under 1000 pcs). We are comfortable machining a wide range of materials. We have a trusted network of material suppliers, various machine shops with specialty equipment as well as post processing metal finishing shops. As a result, we are able to provide turnkey solutions. You provide a concept, or a drawing and we’ll take it from there. From creating a CAD model to machining prototypes to running production. We can source any postprocessing requirements you may have as well. Typical options include anodizing, oxiding, heat treatment, powder coating, painting, polishing, bead blasting, electroplating and more.
